Rocking Chair
This one I thought would be a bit more of a challenge. This is the first project where I have started from roughly sawn timber and have had to measure, cut and plane the components to size in preparation for the joinery.
The progress of the build can be found here
I took a trip to Surrey Timbers and picked out some Cherry. This stock should be enough to make the rocking chair and an Ottoman which will be the next major project.
Next... measure out the indiviual components, cut the stock and plane each piece to size and square. Here I'm using a Stanley No.78 converted into a scrub plane. This takes off the rough marks left by the saw mill. This will be followed by a Stanley No. 4 1/2 also converted into a scrub plane (but less severe) and then by a No.4 smoothing plane or a No.5 Jack plane.
Checking for twist
Slight twist. Up on the back left/front right. | ...now it's gone. |
Bit of an issue with the seat. This is the second time I've glued it up. I planed it flat but it has again started to cup. Will have to think carefully about how I'm going to resolve this. |
These are the formas I'll be using to create the rockers and the back slats of the chair
